How did NY get its name?:
Originally founded and under the control of Dutch explorers, New York was called New Amsterdam. Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands (aka Holland). In 1664, the English captured New Amsterdam, and renamed it New York in honor of the leader behind this military victory - the Duke of York.
