The struggles of bringing all citizens together in Detroit was first realized in 1833 when Detroit served as a valuable Underground Railroad destination in the north and to Canada. In 1942 and 1943, with the influx of new citizens (especially blacks) coming to the Detroit area help build vehicles for WWII's military needs, battle lines started to be defined through segregation of neighborhoods and subsequently schools and more.
Then, on this date, July 23rd of 1967, one of the worst riots in US History began on 12th Street in Detroit. This riot between police and blacks, started in 12th Street's mostly African-American neighborhood, led to 43 deaths, and the destruction of more than 2,000 buildings. It took involvement of the Michigan National Guard and the US Army's 82nd and 101st Airborne units to get things under control. The media painted it as part of the overall war and civil rights protesting of the "long, hot summer of 1967."
