"The Eagle has landed."
[Statement by Armstrong alerting NASA Mission Control that the "Eagle" lunar module had landed safely on the surface of the moon.]
Fifty-two years ago, on this date, July 20 of 1969, Apollo 11's lunar module and crew successfully reached the moon. America had won the 'Space Race' against the Soviets.
Astronaut Neil Armstrong then became the first man on the moon and famously proclaimed,
"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Today's Inspirational Quote from Our Flag
"Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon,
July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."
- quote on plaque left behind by Apollo 11 crew on the lunar module ladder

Apollo 11's astronauts left behind, on the moon's surface, several historical items from former U.S. Presidents and other world leaders, including this plaque.
And, back on Earth, the accomplishments of Apollo 11's crew, of Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, & Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, was celebrated with a big ticker-tape parade through NYC (see public domain image below).
