On this date, July 15, in 1870, Georgia becomes the last state to be readmitted to the Union, to the rejoin the United States of America. At the end of the Civil War, a period called the Reconstruction began - a rebuilding of the South to a new way of life without slaves as their labor force for farming and other commerce. In Georgia at the beginning of its Reconstruction in 1865, there were nearly 500,000 "freedmen" (former slaves) who needed a place to live and work. So, federal (national) officials came down and redistributed 400,000 acres of land in coastal Georgia and South Carolina to 40,000 of the 500,000 freed slaves. Obviously, there was lots more to do and help Georgia and its citizens (old and new) rejoin the Union (USA) just five years later.

Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
... comes from Martin Luther King Jr's 'I have a Dream' speech ...
"I have a dream ...
that one day on the red hills of Georgia,
the sons of former slaves
and the sons of former slave owners
will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood."
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
