On this date, July 14th of 1943, the George Washington Carver National Monument was established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This was the first national monument dedicated to an African-American and the first to a non-President. The monument encompasses the home and land upon which George Washington Carver grew up as a boy in Missouri.
So, who was George Washington Carver and why was the national monument dedicated to him?
He's most well-known for helping farmers grow peanuts and promote 105 recipes that contain peanuts. As the most well-known black scientist of the early 1900s, he excelled in agricultural science while inventing new ways for farmers to improve soils depleted from years of cotton planting. And, the peanut was the most successful crop he promoted while teaching at Tuskegee Institute.
