Hollywoodland?! Yes, you, probably like me, had never seen or heard of the world renowned "Hollywood" sign above Los Angeles being the "Hollywoodland" sign. But, it's true. On this date, July 13th of 1923, the "Hollywoodland" sign was dedicated in the Hollywood Hills of LA. During repairs and renovations to the sign in 1949, the last 4 letters, "land," was dropped from the sign. So, that's why few Americans know or saw the sign in its original format.
The letters are approximately 45 feet tall. Students, that's probably double the height of your school flagpole. And it was originally put up as an advertisement by a local real estate development company. Now, it's a Los Angeles Historical Monument.
