On this date, 40 years ago, on July 7th of 1981, Sandra Day O'Connor was nominated to become a Supreme Court Justice. Her nomination as the first female to serve on the Supreme Court was approved by Congress. She was sworn in on September 25, 1981 (public domain image is below). She went on to serve as a member of SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) for nearly 25 years. After her service as an Associate Justice of SCOTUS, she began what she now considers her most important work - her legacy of civic education. In 2009, she founded iCivics - a nonprofit on a mission to transform civic education for every student in America with innovative and engaging games and resources. Today, iCivics is used by more than 200,000 teachers providing civic education to more than 5 million students across all 50 states.
Unfortunately, in 2018, at age 88, Justice O'Connor announced her exit from public life as she moved into an assisted-living facility to treat her dementia.
