How did ID get its name?:
Historians can't conclude where ID got its name, but the most common belief is that George Willing suggested the name in the early 1860s. He said it comes from the Shoshone (Native Americans in that area) word for "the sun comes from the mountains."

Notable ID Landmarks and Historic Sites:
1) Bear River Massacre Historical Site
- is the site of one of worst and largest massacres of Native Americans, the Shoshone tribe. On January 29th of 1863, Union Army infantry from California attacked and killed an estimated 384 Shoshone. Numerous plaques and memorials line the site and give details about the "slaughter" of Shoshone tribe members. The gruesome attack didn't get much attention because it happened in the middle of the Civil War.

Did you know this about Idaho?:
Called the potato state by most. Idaho grows about 1/3 of all the potatoes eaten by Americans
Hells Canyon drops 7,900 feet down. That's deeper than the Grand Canyon.
It's State Capitol building is the only one heated using a renewable energy source - geothermal water (warm water from 3,000 feet down heats the building)
