How did NH get its name?:

Short and simply, unlike many other state names' origins, Captain John Mason, an English sailor and colonist, was granted land in 1629, and he named it New Hampshire after the English county of Hampshire.

​Notable NH Landmarks and Historic Sites:

1) Canterbury Shaker Village
- a National Historic Landmark, this is one the most authentic, 200+ year old Shaker communities, founded by "Shaking Quakers" (Christians who literally shaked with excitement during church services

​​​2) Mt. Washington Cog Railway
- the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway, completed in 1869, which travels 3 miles while climbing from 2,700 feet to the peak at 6,288 feet

​3) Josiah Bartlett House
- home of one of NH's reps at the Second Continental Congress, who likely signed the Declaration of Independence second, right after Hancock, and served as NH's Governor

Did you know this about New Hampshire?:

It was the first state to declare independence from England in 1775


The first American in space, Alan Shepard, was from Derry, NH

Christa McAuliffe, the first civilian and teacher, in space will forever be memorialized for dying during the Space Challenger disaster in 1986.  She was a teacher from Concord, NH, and a planetarium was built in Concord in her honor
