How did WV get its name?:
West Virginia came to be during the Civil War. When the western counties of Virginia voted not to secede with the rest of Virginia, it was the beginning of a new state being formed. Names proposed for the new state included: Kanawha, Augusta, Allegheny, West Virginia. The name was voted upon by the state's new lawmakers and West Virginia received 30 of the 44 votes cast.

1) Appalachian Trail
- the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, nonprofit that works to improve, maintain, and promote this amazing hiking trail, is headquartered in WV. The trail runs 2,220 miles from Mount Katahdin, Maine to Springer Mountain, Georgia.

2) New River Gorge National Park and Preserve
- runs 53 miles in southern WV and is home to some of the best whitewater rafting and rock-climbing in the east coast

3) Harper's Ferry National Historic Park
- site where join John Brown, an abolitionist (anti-slavery person), took over a military armory in the hopes of arming slaves and then fighting to free them. US Marines were sent in and John Brown and his group surrendered. This set the stage for the American Civil War two years later (separation of the North and South because of slavery beliefs).
