The United States of America and Great Britain are fighting again?! On this date, June 18th of 1812, President James Madison signed the declaration of war versus Great Britain - a second War of Independence of sorts. This war, which lasted about 2 years, was named the "War of 1812." Some of the highlights of this war included:
-The British burning of Washington DC in 1814, including the White House
-The Battle of Queenston Heights, the war's first battle in Canada
-USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) defeating a number of British ships
-Andrew Jackson leading US Army to victory in New Orleans
-and the Battle of Fort McHenry, where the Star-Spangled Banner was born and written ;)
During this war, the British gave the American forces nearly all they could handle. Thankfully, the British were focused on another war front in Europe - fighting Napoleon. So, in the end, the British superior naval power was finally overcome by the Americans.
