Born on this date, June 16 of 1738, in Connecticut was Mary Katherine Goddard. So, why was her birth and life significant?
Mary Katherine Goddard was selected as the first publisher of the Declaration of Independence with all the Congressional signatures. This printing of the Declaration of Independence was entitled the Goddard Broadside by historians. Mary and her husband owned printing shops in Providence, RI, Philadelphia, PA and Baltimore, MD. Mary managed the shops while her husband traveled to make sales, so her name appears on the first printed Declaration of Independence as "printed by Mary Katherine Goddard." Mary went on to become the first Postmaster for Baltimore during the hectic and dangerous days of the Revolutionary War.
Please, take a moment to appreciate Mary Goddard's courage to print the Declaration of Independence despite the potential for being arrested for treason against the King of England - the colonial ruler at the time. She, like the Congressmen, took considerable risk by standing up for the freedoms colonial Americans wanted. And, for her actions, we are grateful.
