How did KY get its name?:
The origin of Kentucky's name is not certain, but most believe it based on an Iroquoian (Native American Tribe in the area) word meaning "on the meadow." The area was partitioned from Virginia. Back in 1776, the counties of Virginia west of the Appalachian Mountains were called Kentucky County.
Nickname of KY:
The Bluegrass State
