National Maritime Day
First of all you young citizens / students are probably asking yourself, "What does maritime mean?"
Well, without maritime, the United State of America, would not be as we know it today. Maritime, meaning of or relating to the sea, is how America was discovered and born - by way of well known ships like the Santa Maria and the Mayflower. During the first 150 years of America's existence, nearly all of immigrants arrived by way of "maritime" vessels (ships).

The United States of America was born and will always be a great maritime nation. Much of our nation's growth and security is due to its maritime might - by way of its US Navy, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard units. The US Congress, in 1933, created National Maritime Day, to commemorate (remember and honor) the first American steamship, Savannah, departing on May 22, 1819, to make the first transatlantic trip from the US to Europe (England) using a steampowered boat. With the success of this voyage, many materials, immigrants, and even troops sailed from and to America.
At its height for military usage, during World War II, the Merchant Marine service and its merchant ships had more than 250,000 sailor-members and more than 6,700 of them died during combat as more than 800 merchant ships, transporting goods and materials to support our military, were sunk or damaged.

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... relays a couple of corny maritime / shipping / boating jokes ;) ...
Jack asked Diane, "Can you go move my boat? It's at the dock."
And Diane replied jokingly, "I'm sorry to hear that your boat is sick. You should offer it some vitamin sea."
:) ;) :)
Diane, then asked Jack, "Remembering our roots from British shipping, do you know what sea monsters eat?"
Jack moaned and said, "Hmmm, I'm not sure."
So, Diane stated, "Come on you should know this. They like to eat fish and ships of course."
