Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... the end of public school segregation ...
... the end of public school segregation ...
[ Thurgood Marshall, who later became a Supreme Court Justice, celebrates winning the Brown v. Board of Education case = public domain image ]
On this date, May 17th, in 1954, the Supreme Court voted unanimously, a 9-0 decision, that, per the US Constitution, public schools must be desegregated (meaning - they cannot separate schools of students based on their skin color; no more all-white or all-black schools). The court case, officially named Oliver Brown, et al. v. Board of Education of Topeka, et al., was brought before the US Supreme Court by Thurgood Marshall and his team of lawyers.

The US Supreme Court decision was celebrated in much of America, except the South - where segregated schools had been deeply engrained into their way of life for more than 100 years. (see image below, CC license from King of Hearts via Wikipedia).
So, as you might imagine, there was lots of resistance and it took a couple decades to fully integrate (desegregate) public schools in the South. Students like Ruby Bridges, the Little Rock 9, James Meredith, and many others had to nearly fight their way into southern public schools to break the barrier and begin the desegregation process.

Today's Inspirational Quote from Our Flag
“Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice,
speak out, because this is your country.
This is your democracy.
Make it. Protect it. Pass it on."
- Thurgood Marshall
