On this date, May 10th, in 1775, the Second Continental Congress met for the first time in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PA). They gathered in a meeting room within the Pennsylvania Statehouse (now called Independence Hall - see pics below).

The Second Continental Congress was made up of representatives from the 13 colonies. This Congress served as the national government for the United States from 1775 to 1781. The members debated and decided upon such importnat national matters as building a national defense (Continental Army and Navy), selecting ambassadors to represent USA and create partnerships with other countries, and developing a plan to create our nation. It's most famous work was to create the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
