Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
V-E Day (Victory in Europe) Day!!!
V-E Day (Victory in Europe) Day!!!
[ public domain image = British Prime Minister Winston Churchill waves to huge crowd celebrating VE Day in London ]
76 years ago, on May 8th, in 1945, Europeans, Americans, and freedom-lovers around the world celebrated "V-E Day," also known as “Victory in Europe Day.”
Karl Donitz, next command of Nazi Germany after Hitler had committed suicide 8 days earlier, and other Nazi leaders, made an unconditionaly surrender to the Allied Forces. Finally, the bloody fighting by the U.S. forces to help free western Europe from German control was over. An estimated 104,812 Americans were killed in action fighting in Europe during WWII. And, now, America and the Allied Forces could turn their attention and full military force against the Japanese in the Pacific to fully end the war.
