On this date, April 26, in 1785, John James Audubon was born in Haiti. Audubon was a French-American ornithologist (also known as a person who studies birds), naturalist, and painter. He combined his artistic talents with his passion for birds to complete one of the best bird identification books ever. Entitled, The Birds of America, Audubon's illustrations in the book (scroll down), showed 497 types of birds (bird species) in their natural setting.
This pic above, from Plate 41 of The Birds of America by Audubon, shows ruffed grouse, birds hiding in ground cover (foliage). The pic below, provides a view of something we can't see in the USA or the world anymore - the extinct (no longer living) ivory-billed woodpecker. Due to this book and all of Audubon's amazing work with American birds, the National Audubon Society, a nonprofit whose mission is to conserve (protect) birds and their habitats (living areas) was founded and named after him in 1905.
Today's Inspirational Quote from Our Flag
"I felt an intimacy with them...
bordering on frenzy [that] must accompany my steps through life."
- John Audubon
(above: talking about his encounter with and painting of American birds
and, below an insightful reflection from him)
"A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers,
but borrowed from his children."
