[ Battle of Lexingon - public domain image from NY Public Library ]
On this date, April 19, in 1775, the first battles of the American Revolutionary War took place in Massachusetts. School book historians have always proclaimed the Battles of Lexington and Concord as the start of the war that day in 1775. But, there was another battle that day, the biggest of the day, in Menotomy, now called Arlington, Massachusetts. Menotomy was the sight of, what some consider, the first ambush, non-traditional military tactics, being used by colonial militia forces against the British army. As the British troops retreated from the battles in Lexington and Concord, they marched on Concord Road toward Boston and upon reaching Menotomy were surprised by about 5,100 colonial militia men who were waiting / hiding in positions along the road. The colonial militia men, better known as "Minutemen," fought bravely that day in Lexington, Concord, and Menotomy, killed 73 British troops, and suffered 49 deaths themselves.
In honor of the courageous fighting spirit of the "Minutemen" that day, 5 states now celebrate "Patriots' Day" (MA, ME, CT, WI, & ND). And re-enactments of the Battles of Lexington and Concord are held each year on the third Monday in April, a state holiday in Massachusetts, to ensure all remember and respect the sacrifices made to secure our freedoms through the Revolutionary War.
