Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag

[ Saddam Hussein statue in Firdos Square of Baghdad brought down by US troops = public domain image ]
On this date, April 7, in 2003, the US was in the middle of the Battle of Baghdad - an important fight to take over Iraq's capital city and remove its dictator, President Saddam Hussein, from power. During the Battle of Baghdad, which lasted, according to most military sources, from April 3 - 10, 2003, one significant and symbolic event occurred on April 9th. Iraqi citizens and US military personnel from the Marine Corps pulled down a massive Saddam Hussein statue in Baghdad's Firdos Square - symbolizing the end of the Iraqi leader's dictatorship. Unfortunately, Saddam Hussein escaped from this battle and wasn't captured until December.

Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
... was stated on April 10, 2003, the day victory in Baghdad was proclaimed and a new, interim government was starting to be established ...
“Saddam Hussein is now taking his rightful place alongside Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Ceausescu in the pantheon of failed brutal dictators,
and the Iraqi people are well on their way to freedom."
- Donald Rumsfeld, US Secretary of Defense

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... pokes at Saddam Hussein and his poorly trained Iraqi military forces ...
Jack asked Diane, "Do you know why it is so easy to train Iraqi warplane pilots?"
Diane stated, "Huh, no I don't."
So, Jack replied, "You only have to teach them how to take off. Get it? Because the Amerian fighter pilots shoot down all the Iraqi warplanes!"
:) ;) :)
Then, Diane came back with, "Jack, do you know what the national bird of Iraq was during the US-Iraq War?"
Jack said, "Huh, I'm not sure - maybe, a pigeon?"
Diane answered, "No, Jack. It's the 'duck' of course. Do you get it? Because of all the allied forces aerial bombing and artillery shelling they are constantly 'ducking' for cover."

Finally, Jack finished off this joke battle by asking Diane, "Do you know why Iraq's navy ships had glass hulls (bottoms)?"
Diane wondered, "Well, I'm not sure because I don't think there are any beautiful reefs in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Iraq or Kuwait."
And, Jack replied, "Come on, Diane. It relates to our first joke. It's so the navy can see their Iraqi warplanes down below?! Yes, that's right the shotdown Iraqi warplanes are resting below navy ships on the bottom of the Persian Gulf."
