Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag

... recalls the origins of a once celebrated day - Army Day ...

On this date, April 6th, in 1929, Army Day was celebrated to mark the anniversary of the United States jumping into World War I. Interestingly, Army Day was first celebrated the year before on May 1st, in 1928, to try and reduce the Communists' holiday known as Workers' Day. The government established Army Day to wake-up Americans to the importance of national defense and inform them of the wide variety of Army activities conducting regularly to be ready, when called upon, to protect our freedoms.

In 1936, President Roosevelt issued a proclamation, and in 1937, Congressed passed a resolution to officially recognize Army Day, It was a short-lived nationally observed holiday, as it was last recognized on April 6, 1949. From then on, the Army's birthday on June 14th, and the recent memory of American troops' sacrifices to win World War II, replaced the WWI-connected Army Day.

Today's Interesting Quote from Our Flag
... reinforces why the US government created Army Day to ensure America's citizens understood the need to have an Army that's prepared to defend our freedoms when called upon ...
"The failure to make adequate preparation for the inevitable struggle,
the consequent suffering from disease and death entailed upon the armies which were hastily raised,
the prolongation of the conflict far beyond the time which sufficient and equipped forces would have required for victory,
and the heavy costs of reconstruction"
-US Government (author unknown)

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... has a laugh or two about the Army and other military forces ...
Jack asked Jane, "Do you know how the military branches use stars?"
Jane responded, "I have hunch about the Army and Navy, but no clue on the Air Force."
So, Jack answered, "Army troops sleep under the stars.
Navy sailors use the stars to navigate their ships.
And, of course, the "soft" Air Force personnel use the stars to rank their hotel choices"
:) ;) :)
Then Jane asked Jack, "Which month do military troops dislike the most?"
Jack replied, "Probably January because it's so cold when they do military training outdoors."
Jane said, "Come on this was an easy one. It's March, of course - because they prefer a ride instead of walking. Get it."

Lastly, Jack came back to Jane, one last time with, "Do you why Twitter users don't make good Army soldiers?"
Jane wondered, "Huh, maybe because they should have their out of their phones."
Jack said, "Actually, it's because Twitter users are too quick to 'retweet.'"
