Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... relays the story of a little known, but honorable group ...
... relays the story of a little known, but honorable group ...
On this date, April 5th, in 1945, four young WWII widows (wives whose husbands' were killed in action) met in an apartment in NYC and decided to found 'Gold Star Wives of America' - a group that honors the sacrifices of their lost loved ones serving in the US military. Later in 1945, 15 wives, including Eleanor Roosevelt, who joined the group upon the death of her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, applied for and received a charter as a nonprofit organization to support the wives and families of fallen soldiers (military personnel who died in the line of duty).
This group was following in the footsteps of the first group formed, in 1928, by mothers of those lost during WWI, to honor their sons and daughters who died while on active duty - American Gold Star Mothers. The name of both 'Gold Star' groups comes from the custom of service member families displaying a banner in their window, a service flag, that shows a star for each family member serving in the US military. A blue star on the service banner represents a living service member and a gold star on it pays homage to a service member who died on active duty.

The first Gold Star Wives Day was celebrated in 2010. And, since 2013, a Congressional resolution (agreement) has designated April 5th as Gold Star Wives Day. Obviously, there are more than just husbands who die while actively serving our nation, so to be more inclusive, most refer to the day now as Gold Star Spouses Day.
Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
"Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women
in the service of our country can never be repaid.
They have earned our undying gratitude.
America will never forget their sacrifices."
-President Harry S. Truman

Today's Fun from Our Flag is a Memorable Ceremony with Our Flag
This half-staff flag ceremony, one of at least 20 done in the past few years, happened at Flag Steward HQ in August of 2019 to pay tribute to a Fallen Marine whose Gold Star Wife and children still feel the pain of losing their active military husband / dad.
We performed a short U.S. and Marine Corps Flag raising and lowering to half-staff ceremony to honor USMC Gunnery Sergeant Scott Koppenhafer.
Take a moment to relive this tribute as an opportunity to think of the thousands of Gold Star Spouses out there in pain - missing their fallen soldier.
