Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... recalls the discovery of Florida ...

Picture
In 1493, this Spanish explorer came to the Americas on Christopher Columbus' second trip.  Then 20 years later, he led his own voyage, the first, to Florida.  Can you name this pioneer?  Yes, it's Ponce de Leon - who on this date, April 2nd, in 1513, discovered "La Florida."
Ponce de Leon served as Puerto Rico's first Governor.
Then, in 1521, Ponce de Leon organized and led a trip to try and colonize Florida (set-up a community) with 200 Spaniards.  Unfortunately, they were not prepared to do battle with the native people, the Calusa, who badly wounded Ponce de Leon and forced their colonists group to leave.

Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
... explains how myths, like Ponce de Leon searching for the Fountain of Youth, came to be ...

"From earliest times, humans - explorers and thinkers - have wanted to figure out the shape of their world. Forever, the way we've done that is through storytelling. It is difficult to let the truth get in the way of a good story."

- Adam Savage
(American entertainer)
Today's Fun from Our Flag
... asks which of these do you think Ponce de Leon found when he landed at 'La Florida' in 1513? ...
And, now it's time to ...
