Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag

[ Signing of the Alaska Treaty of Cessation between USA and Russia = public domain image ]
On this date, March 30th, in 1867, the US Secretary of State, William Seward, and Russian Minister, Eduard Stoeckl, signed a treaty which transferred all the land of Alaska from Russia to the United States of America. Unbelievably, Seward negotiated to purchse Alaska for a measly $7.2 million - equal to about 2 cents per acre (an acre is about the size of a football field minus the endzones).

While we call Seward's move to get Alaska brilliant now, back then, many called it "Seward's Folly" (folly means a mistake) or "Seward's Icebox." That is until gold was discovered in Alaska's Klondike region in 1898. And, soon thereafter, oil, "black gold," was found and pumped out of Alaska - bringing in many more millions than gold to America's economy.

Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
... tells about the beauty of Alaska ...
"John Muir, the famous naturalist, wrote in his journal
that you should never go to Alaska as a young man
because you'll never be satisfied with any other place as long as you live.
And there's a lot of truth to that."
- Tom Bodett
