Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag

[ U.S. Military Medals of Honor for (L to R) the US Army, the US Navy, Marine Corps, & Coast Guard, and the US Air Force = public domain image ]
On this date, March 25, in 1863, US Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, awarded the first Medal of Honors (6 of the first 22) to Union soldiers who completed the Great Locomotive Chase (pictured below) in northern Georgia, in April 1862, during the Civil War. Then, in 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed Public Law 101-564 to designate March 25th each year as "National Medal of Honor Day."
The law states:
Whereas the Medal of Honor is the highest distinction that can be awarded by the president, in the name of the congress, to members of the armed forces who have distinguished themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their lives above and beyond the call of duty ... Whereas public awareness of the importance of the Medal of Honor has declined in recent years; and Whereas the designation of National Medal of Honor Day will focus the efforts of national, State, and local organizations striving to foster public appreciation and recognition of Medal of Honor recipients."

So, over the years, there have been 3,526 Medals of Honor awarded. And, since this is Women's History Month, we need to talk about women, actually a woman, being bestowed with the Medal of Honor. Of the 3,507 Medal of Honor recipients (yes, that means 19 men earned 2 Medals of Honor), only 1, yes, just one, has been presented to a woman. And, it happened way back in 1865 for actions during the Civil War. GO HERE to see how, on the 2017 version of this service, we featured Dr. Mary Walker's courageous actions.
Today's Inspirational Quote from Our Flag
"I would rather have that medal,
the Congressional Medal of Honor,
than to be President of the United States."

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... doesn't pass along any jokes because the
Medal of Honor is 'no joke' ;) ...
And, it is definitely not like this
- like medals handed out to American swimmers in recent Olympic Games ;)
