On this date, March 10th, in 1804, the "Three Flags Day" ceremony was completed in St. Louis, Missouri. Within 24 hours, from the morning of March 9th to the morning of March 10th, three different country flags flew over the Louisiana Territory. First, on March 9th, Amos Stoddard, the new U.S. Lieutenant Governor of the District of Louisiana, joined by Meriwether Lewis, of the famous "Lewis & Clark Expedition," ordered the Flag of Spain, which had flown over the territory for 36 years as a Spanish colony, to be lowered. It was replaced with the Flag of France, the country who had recently acquired the Louisiana Territory from Spain and then quickly turned around and sold it for a very cheap price to the U.S. Government and President Thomas Jefferson. The Flag of France was then replaced at sunrise on March 10th with the U.S. Flag - symbolizing the territory's new owner. This ceremony set the stage for Lewis and Clark to depart within the coming weeks, in May, to go explore the Louisiana Territory - from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean.
Today's Interesting Quote from Our Flag
... speaks to the social justice, political, and other protests we've witnessed these past couple years ...
"What country can preserve its liberties
if its rulers are not warned from time to time
that their people preserve the spirit of resistance?"
-Thomas Jefferson said to William Stephens Smith, in 1787

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... joke about St. Louis, the 'Gateway to the West,' and launch point for the Lewis & Clark Expedition through the Louisiana Territory ...
While visiting my father-in-law in St. Louis during the holidays,
I asked him why he and his Jaycee buddies are so friendly and charitable to all.
And, he replied jokingly, "it's because Missouri (misery) loves company."
:) ;) :) ... in case you missed it - St. Louis is in the state of Missouri :) ;) ;)

Then, my father-in-law added, "And, lately, I know it sounds backwards, but my buddies and I are actually happy while we're into the Blues."
