Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
[ Race cars lined up on Daytona Beach straight line race course in 1922 = public domain image ]
On this date, March 8, in 1936, the first oval stock car race was held at the Daytona Beach and Road Course in Florida. This race was the first and last race hosted, organized, and promoted by the City of Daytona Beach. The city asked local racer Sig Haugdahl to design the track, whose sandy turns caused a bunch of problems and prevented the cars from completing its planned 78 laps. After this disappointing first oval course race, the city declined to host or organize future races. But, that didn't stop the growth of this sport, which eventually became the today's well-known NASCAR (National Association of Stock Car Racing) series with races all over the USA.

Since March is Women's History Month, this is a great opportunity to highlight NASCAR's first female stock car racer - Sara Christian. She raced in the first official NASCAR race at Charlotte Speedway in 1949. She went on to become the first woman to earn a Top 10 finish. And, still today, she is the only woman in NASCAR history to have a Top 5 finish.
Today's Insightful Quote from Our Flag
... comes from one of NASCAR's youngest drivers ...
"I think NASCAR racing comes down... to going for those last-lap passes,
making those risky moves.
That's what makes drivers unique."
-Hallie Deegan
(19 year-old NASCAR truck series race driver)

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... is a stock car racing joke ...
Did you hear about the former school janitor who became a stock car racer?
As you might guess, the growl of his stock car engine sounds like "broom, broom, broom!"
