[ Note: We're celebrating Ohio's statehood today because there are two states that celebrate their statehood on March 1st - Ohio and Nebraska.  So, today, we're featuring Ohio and tomorrow will be Nebraska ]

How did OH get its name?:

Ohio gets its name from the Ohio River.  The river's name comes from the Seneca (Native American tribe) word ohi:yo' which means "great river."


Nickname of OH:

The Buckeye State
Note: The nickname comes from the popular in Ohio, Buckeye tree - which has tree nuts (pictured below) that look like a deer's eye / a buck's eye

Notable OH Landmarks and Historic Sites:


1) National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
Note: This museum in Cincinnati teaches visitors about the Underground Railroad - which was a series of paths that a network of citizens used to help southern-state slaves escape to freedom in the northern states

​​2) Ohio and Erie Canal Trail
Note: This trail is a national heritage site that runs more than 100 miles along the waterway and allows walkers, bikers, runners, boats, and a touring train to move on / near it

​3) Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Note: This museum, in Cleveland, sits on the shores of Lake Erie and is the home of historical artifacts from Rock-n-Roll music performers - like Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, of the Beattles, and much more
Did you know this about Ohio?:

Ohio is the home state (birthplace) of 7 U.S. Presidents: Ulysses S. Grant (#18), Rutherford B. Hayes (#19), James Garfield (#20), Benjamin Harrison (#23), William McKinley (#25), William Taft (#27), and Warren Harding (#29)


America's first electric traffic light was installed in Cleveland in 1914.  It had two colors (red and green) and a buzzer warned of the changing light

With 2 Pro Football teams (Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals), one of the most well-known, elite college football teams (The Ohio State Buckeyes), and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, you might say that American Football is very popular in Ohio ;)
