30 years ago this weekend on February 28th of 1991, the US forces ended Saddam Hussein's Iraqi military occupation of the country of Kuwait. The 100-hour (4 day) combat phase of Operation Desert Storm showed the US military might over Iraq - destroying more than 3,300 Iraqi tanks, 100s of aircraft, and capturing 80,000 Iraqi troops.

For the close of this Black History Month, rather than go into the details of America's Gulf War victory in 1991, we're going to highlight the contributions of and insights into African-Americans military service during this time. About 104,000 black men and women were part of the awesome US force that overran the Iraqis occupying Kuwait and restored the country to its people. The African-American combatants, who normally are 12% of the US population, were an overwhelming 30% of the US troops in action during Operation Desert Storm.
Why were the number of blacks fighting for Kuwait's freedom 2.5 times the norm? Some say this higher percentage of blacks showed the military's success in accepting and integrating all peoples (little prejudice), but others say it was due to the lack of regular jobs in America for blacks. Regardless, there was much pride displayed by African-Americans serving in the military back then, and it continues today.

Today's Inspirational Quote from Our Flag
"The armed forces have always provided opportunities for blacks, which blacks have found attractive and have gone after, and I see no reason to change that now."
- General Colin Powell (1991)
"The military is the only major institution in America with something like a level playing field. It is the only place where a white will be bossed around by a black on a regular basis at the local level. There is probably a better racial climate in the military than on a college campus."
-Professor Moskos at Northwestern University (1991)

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... is a corny Gulf War military joke ...
... is a corny Gulf War military joke ...
After 2 months of being on a US Navy cruiser sitting off the coast of Kuwait preparing for battle,
Seaman Smith complained to Master Chief Jones, "My recruiter told me that if I joined the Navy I would see the world, and so far all I've seen is the coast of Kuwait."
Master Chief Jones answered back, "Young sailor Smith the world is 75% water and the Navy will show you that soon enough. If you want to see the other 25% of the world, go join the Army."
