How did AZ get its name?:

Spanish explorers created the word "Arizonac" from speaking with the O'odham Native Americans of the region.  The O'odham named the area, where Spanish miners found silver and a source of water in the vast desert, after their word for "small spring" - "ali sonak."

Nickname of AZ:

The Grand Canyon State

Did you know this about Arizona?:

Like the old Pony Express, "Snail mail" (U.S. mail) is still delivered by mule, not a fast pony :), to an isolated part of the Havasupai reservation in the northwestern part of Arizona (see picture below).

Amazingly, in Arizona's high desert climate the nation's lowest and highest temperature can occur in the same day.

Arizona's unofficial nickname is the 'Valentine State." Why?  You can blame Abe Lincoln and bad luck. ;)  In 1912, President Taft didn't want to sign and proclaim Arizona's statehood on February 12th because it was Lincoln's birthday, and he didn't want to do it on the 13th because he was superstitious and believed it be bad luck.  So, he held off proclaiming Arizona's statehood until February 14 - Valentine's Day.
