Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... an important WWII victory at Guadalcanal ...

[ US troops landing at Guadalcanal = public domain image ]
On this date, February 9th, of 1943, after 6 long months of intense fighting against Japanese troops, the US troops claimed victory in the Battle of Guadalcanal.  Despite losing more than 2,000 Americans, this fight was an important victory, the first major land battle against the Empire of Japan, that lifted America's spirits for future battles to win WWII in the Pacific.

Since this is Black History month, we're highlighting the achievements of a U.S. Army Division, the 93rd Infantry Division, the only African-American division to fight in the Pacific during WWII, at Guadalcanal and beyond (a small patrol pictured above).  The 93rd's soldiers served mainly as support personnel - building the airfields that would enable America to devastatingly bomb Japanese held islands.  When they did get to fight, the 93rd Infantry Division excelled.  After victory at Guadalcanal, the 93rd (a small patrol pictured above) was shipped to nearby Bougainville, a territory of New Guinea, and they forced the surrender of the highest ranking Japanese officer to be captured during WWII along with thousands of Japanese soldiers.

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... has a couple WWII jokes to enjoy ...
Last V-J Day, there was a 94 year-old World War II veteran speaking at my school gym about his combat experience.  So, after his talk, I stood up and asked, "While in the jungles of the Pacific far from the reach of American news, how did you know the Japanese had surrendered?”

The old WWII Veteran answered, "Easy!  The Japanese stopped shooting at us."

Note: Good, old silent movie comedian,Charlie Chaplain, making fun of warfare ;)

During that same WWII talk, a classmate of mine nervously asked,
"Did you ever kill anyone?"
The old WWII Veteran, then gulped and said in a low voice, "I probably did because I was the cook."
And, now it's time to ...
Recite the Pledge of Allegiance
Students across America, at school or at home, thankful of our Greatest Generation's war victories, like at Guadalcanal, please unite and recite the Pledge.
