Today, is Groundhog Day - an event that started on February 2nd in 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. This tradition comes from a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that believes that a groundhog exiting his burrow on February 2nd can forecast the rest of our winter's weather. Scientific research has proven that this event is a myth and not factual. So, what is the traditional myth?
If the groundhog, known as Punxsutawney Phil, comes out of his hole on February 2nd and see its shadow, then it will quickly go back into its hole and this means that winter will continue for 6 more weeks. To me it seems backwards, but cloudy weather on this day, that keeps the groundhog from seeing his shadow, means it will be clear, sunny, and warmer earlier - spring is going to arrive early and the next 6 weeks of winter will be more like spring than winter. Huh? That's a confusing mouthful. Either way - it's a fun, break and opportunity for folks who are tired of being in the middle of winter to talk and dream about warmer weather soon. ;)
