Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
[ US House of Representatives celebrate passing the 13th Amendment = public domain pic from Harper's Weekly ]
National Freedom Day, first recognized and proclaimed by President Truman in 1948, celebrates the day, February 1st of 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment - a joint resolution (proposed law) approved by the US Congress (US Senate and US House of Representatives) that outlawed slavery across all of the United States of America. Being an Amendment to the US Constitution, this resolution did not fully become a law until it was ratified by the required number of states (3/4 of the states).
National Freedom Day was a proposed by a former slave, Major Richard Robert Wright Sr. (pictured below). Due to his determination, a year after Major Wright died, Congress approved February 1st as National Freedom Day and forwarded it to President Truman for signature in 1948. This holiday led to the creation of Black History Day and today's better known, Black History Month.
