Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... recalls the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy ...
... recalls the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy ...
On this date, January 28th, in 1986 at 11:39am EST (Eastern Standard Time), while millions of Americans watched the launch live on CNN, the Space Shuttle Challenger suddenly exploded and broke apart. In fact, most Americans aged 42-52 today, were probably, back in 1986, watching the launch in their classroom because a high school social studies teacher, Christa McAuliffe, was aboard to teach live from space during the space shuttle flight. It was a chilling moment, a sad day in American history.
Aboard were 7 NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) astronauts - pictured below from left to right in front row and then back: Michael Smith, Francis Scobee, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Christa McAuliffe, Gregory Jarvis, and Judith Resnik. They were on a mission to deploy two satellites, conduct research, and kickoff the Teacher in Space Project. NASA learned some hard lessons from their safety and leadership mistakes that day. It took nearly 3 years, after a thorough investigation called for by President Reagan, before the Space Shuttle program resumed.

Today's Inspirational Quote from Our Flag
"As we reflect back upon the tragic loss of Challenger
and her brave crew of heroes who were aboard that fateful day,
I am reminded that they truly represented the best of us,
as they climbed aloft on a plume of propellant gasses,
reaching for the stars, to inspire us who were Earthbound."
- Buzz Aldrin, 2nd man on the moon in 1969 ;)
