Born on this date, January 19, in 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts was the first well-known American writer to try and earn a living from his writing only - Edgar Poe (later and better known as Edgar Alan Poe). This 'father of the modern detective story' had quite an odd life himself. He became an orphan (lost both parents) at age 3, attended boarding school in England thanks to funding from his wealthy godfather (John Allan), went on to and dropped out of the University of Virginia because of gambling debts, then enlisted in the Army under a false name, gained a US Military Academy / West Point appointment, only to be kicked out for breaking rules, and finally at age 21, began focusing his life and career on writing.
During the next 19 years he wrote poetry and short stories, served as an editor and literary critic, strangely married his 13 year-old cousin at age 26, developed a bad drinking habit, and died of an unknown cause at age 40.
His most famous work, "The Raven," was a narrative poem first published in 1845.

Today's (Mysterious) Quote from Our Flag
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore--
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
"'Tis some visiter," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door--
Only this and nothing more."
- opening lines of Edgar Allan Poe's short story / narrive poem - "The Raven

Today's Fun from Our Flag
... according to the Riddler, is a corny riddle about today's honoree, Edgar Allan Poe ...
What would you shout, a single word warning, at Edgar Allan Poe if you saw him with his head in a book about to walk into a tree? You only have time to warn him with one word, so it woud be ...
Poetry!
... ha, ha, ha, get it - "Poe a tree" (poetry) ..
