Today's Historical Moment from Our Flag
... remembers a little-known holiday in the United States ...
Ratification Day!

Picture
Over the years, many important treaties, amendments, and other important government documents have been approved (aka ratified) by the U.S. Congress.  Well, this document and event recognizes the first, and perhaps most important, ratification by the Congress of the Confederation on this date, January 14th, in 1784.  On that day, a Congressional Proclamation of the Ratification of the Treaty of Paris of 1783.  This treaty, between the United States and Great Britain, officially ended the Revolutionary War and recognized Our Nation as an independent nation - free of any control from Great Britain.  Due to the lack of speedy communications back then, this treaty process took 9 months to complete.  On April 11 of 1783, the Confederation Congress declared "the cessation of arms" (end of fighting) against Great Britain - the end of the Revolutionary War battles.  Then, a team of 5 representatives, including Ben Franklin (see their pic in the "Fun from Our Flag" section), were sent, by boat, to Paris to negotiate an official peace treaty with King George III of Great Britain.  They completed the treaty on September 3, 1783, and then slowly traveled back to America to deliver the signed treaty to the Confederation Congress for final ratification (approval).

... asks what "chickens" are missing from this famous painting? ...
Picture
The "chickens" missing from this Treaty of Paris of 1783 painting by Benjamin West were ...
... the British representatives for King George III who negotiated the treaty with our U.S. delegation.  The Brits refused to pose for the painting because they were still bitterly sulking and embarassed about losing the Revolutionary War to a bunch of ragtag, colonial patriots in America. ;)  The U.S. treaty-makers were (from left to right) John Jay, John Adams, Ben Franklin, Henry Laurens, and William Temple Franklin.
And, now it's time to ...
Recite the Pledge of Allegiance
Students across America, at school or at home, inspired by America's official independence from King George III and Great Britiain on this Ratification Day, please unite and recite the Pledge.
