Hubbard Glacier, a famous moving ice formation in eastern Alaska, is named after Gardiner Hubbard, founder of the National Geographic Society. The ice at the foot of the glacier, which is underwater in the pic below, is about 400 years old. The glacier often forms and releases 10-story high icebergs which is why visiting ships must keep their distance from Hubbard Glacier.
Did you know this about Alaska?:
Utqiaġvik, Alaska, also known as Barrow, AK, is the northernmost town in Alaska. Starting on May 10th each year, it has nearly 3 straight months of daylight. Then on November 19th each year, this city begins nearly 2 months of constant darkness. Now, you know why some call Alaska - the Land of the Midnight Sun.
Alaska has more than 130 volcanoes and volcanic fields of lava. Shishaldin Volcano (pictured below) in the Aleutian Islands chain of Alaska, is considered one of the world's most symmetrical volancoes, along with Japan's Mount Fuji.

Legends say some Americans first called Russia's sale of Alaska to the U.S. for $7.2 million as "Seward's Folly" (a big mistake by then U.S. Secretary of State William Seward). But, after gold was discovered in Alaska in 1898, and its abundance of oil being pumped now, this land purchase is now considered one of Seward's greatest accomplishments.
