Women's Equality Day is proclaimed each year by the United States President to commemorate the signing of the 19th Amendment, on August 26, 1920, giving women the right to vote. Also known as the "Women's Suffrage (Right to Vote) Bill," the efforts for women to have the right to vote in elections dated back to the creation of the U.S. Constitution back in 1789.  In many of the original colonies, women voted in elections, but, suprisingly, that right was lost during the creation of our nation and its new laws.  So, women started pushing hard for voting rights in 1848 at the Seneca Falls Convention.  Many upstanding women led the efforts for women's suffrage, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony, Margaretta Forten, Harriet Purvis, Ida B. Wells, Mary Talbert, Nannie Burroughs, Carrie Chapman, Catt, Lucy Burns, Alice Paul, and the "Silent Sentinels."  Pictured at the top of the page, the "Silent Sentinels" were a dedicated group of women who protested outside the White House for 2 and 1/2 years - from 1917 until 1920.
