On this date, July 2, in 1943, 1st Lieutenant Charles Hall, of the 99th Fighter Squadron (the Tuskegee Airmen's squadron), became the first African-American to shoot down an enemy aircraft during World War II. It happened while he was part of the figther escort of B-25 bombers on a mission over Sicily, Italy. He spotted two German fighter aircraft (Luftwaffe Focke-Wulf Fw 190s) heading towards the bombers. He turned, cut-off the approach, and riddled one of the German fighters with a bullet spray that sent the Nazi aircraft spiraling down. The swashtika painted on his aircraft symbolizes this first aerial victory. Hall also went on to be the first Tuskegee Airman to earn the Distinguished Flying Cross (one the military's highest awards).
