Today's Moment to Remember
... the first steps towards creating the CIA ...
... the first steps towards creating the CIA ...
On this date, January 22, in 1946, President Truman established the National Intelligency Authority and its operational arm, the Central Intelligence Group. Authorities from the U.S. military, State Department, and FBI (Federal Bureau of Invetigation) were not in favor of Truman's actions. Then, 20 months later, these new parts of the Executive Branch, under the control and command of the President, were re-named and established officially in the National Security Act of 1947 - as the National Security Council and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The CIA is a non-military (civilian) service of the federal government responsible for gathering, processing, and analyzing national security information from foreign countries around the world.
[ The CIA Memorial Wall contains 113 stars (83 when this public domain picture was taken), representing the deaths of 113 CIA officers. Most of the fallen agents' names are listed in the book below the stars, but 39 remain secret. ]
