OTD, January 9, in 1788, Connecticut (CT) earned statehood - becoming the 5th state to join the Union.  Nicknamed "The Constitution State," it is the southernmost state within the New England region.  It is named after the Connecticut River, the longest river in New England, which basically divides the state in half.  The latin phrase on its state flag says "He who transplanted still sustains." (Qui transtulit sustinet)
The state is the 3rd smallest in the U.S. and has a long history of being a leader in maritime industry and activities (shipbuilding, sailing, naval operations, fishing, etc.).  The state capital is Hartford, CT and the most populated city is Bridgeport.
