On this date, January 8, in 1815, then Major General Andrew Jackson led U.S. Army forces to victory over the British Army troops commanded by Major General Sir Edward Pakenham. Surprisingly, Jackson's soldiers defeated the larger, more experienced British forces at the Battle of New Orleans in just 30 minutes. The battle happened before news that the treaty ending the War of 1812 had been signed between the United States and Great Britain on December 24, 1814 (Treaty of Ghent).
