On this date, December 23rd, in 1783, in front of the Congress of the Confederation at Annapolis, Maryland, General George Washington resigned as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army (pictured above in painting by Turnbull). General Washington's resignation signaled the end of his military service and the establishment of civilian/government control of the military.
