On this date, December 19, in 1777, the Continental Army, with 12,000 troops led by George Washington, arrived at Valley Forge - an encampment 18 miles outside of Philadelphia. Here at Valley Forge, the soldiers endured a harsh winter and severe lack of supplies (food, clothing, and equipment) as they prepared and trained to re-engage against the Brits holding Philadelphia in the spring of 1778. In addition to General Washington's amazement at his troop's endurance, here's what General Lafayette expressed, "the unfortunate soldiers were in want of everything; they had neither coats, hats, shirts, nor shoes; their feet and legs froze till they had become almost black, and it was often necessary to amputate them."
