Moment to Remember
... America's first Flag ...
On this date, December 3, in 1775, then Lieutenant John Paul Jones, aboard the USS Alfred docked in Philadelphia, first raised the "Continental Colors" (better known as the "Grand Union Flag") - the first National Flag of the United States of America. The Grand Union Flag, comprised of the Flag of Great Britain squeezed into the upper left corner and 13 alternating stripes representing the 13 colonies, was used by the Continental Army and Navy throughout 1776 and 1777. The Declaration of Independence was signed under the Flag of the Grand Union. And, legend has it, that Margaret Manny, a milliner and seamstress in Philly, made the first Grand Union Flag.
