On this date, on November 27, in 1868, then, Lt.Col. George Custers's 7th U.S. Cavalry unit attacked a Cheyenne (Native American tribe) encampment in Oklahoma.  The attack, called the Battle of Washita River (also known as the Washita Massacre), was part of a series of battles called the Indian Wars.  Custer's quote above reinforced his hunger, and sometimes an obsession, to engage in battle.  In this case, his unit of 500+ soldiers attacked the camp holding 'Black Kettle,' a peace-making chief of the Cheyenne, and shot and killed him along with numerous other Cheyenne warriors and some of their women and children.  There is much debate about the deaths that resulted from this battle.  Regardless, it only further deteriorated the relationship between the U.S. government (US Army) and Native Americans - particularly those who were seeking peace and were leading their tribes to newly designated reservations, like 'Black Kettle.'
There is no Pre-Pledge Tribute this week because there is no school on this #FlagDayFriday
