Near this date, on November 18, in 1872, Susan B. Anthony and 14 other women were arrested for illegally voting in the 1872 Presidential Election. In the trial, United States vs. Susan B. Anthony, the judge asked for her reason for voting. Susan B. Anthony pointed to the recently adopted 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which stated, "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.." So, this begged the question and incited Susan to reinforce that a woman should be considered a "person." Additionally, how could women be taxed like men, but then not afforded the right to the same privilege of voting? Despite her sound argument, she was found guilty and told to pay a $100 fine - which she refused. And, then the circuit judge, who had instructed the all-male jury to find her guilty, smartly didn't put her in jail. That was because if he had jailed her, the trial would have gone to the U.S. Supreme Court to challenge the Constitution and its amendments. The other 14 women were never fined or arrested and were eventually pardoned for illegally voting.
