On this date, November 14, in 1910, civilian aviator, Eugene Burton Ely (pictured below), made the first aircraft takeoff from a ship - from a $500 cobbled together, 83-foot (yes, less than 30 yards long) flight deck on the USS Birmingham, a light cruiser. Eugene Burton Ely was flying a Curtiss Pusher airplane which brushed its wheels through the water below, sprayed Eugene's flight googles, and finally got airborne long enough to make a landing on a nearby beach.
