Today's Moment to Remember
... the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal ...

[ 1 of 4 Japanese troop transports that sank near the shore of Guadalcanal ]
On this date, November 12, in 1942, the decisive Naval Battle of Guadalcanal began.  This series of battles between the Allied and Imperial Japanese naval forces lasted 3 days (Nov. 12-15).  Led by Admiral Bill (aka "Bull") Halsey, US Naval forces prevented the Japanese from supplying troop and equipment reinforcements to the Japanese army trying to retake Guadalcanal and its strategic airstrip - Henderson Field.  The US Navy was outnumbered, but its air superiority and ability to fight better at night proved too much for the Japanese Navy.  Among the many ships lost / sunk during the battle (9 U.S. ships lost versus 17 Japanese ships lost), 2 U.S. Navy Admirals were KIA - the only 2 KIA during WWII surface engagements (Admiral Scott aboard the USS Atlanta and Admiral Callaghan aboard the USS San Francisco).  This U.S. Navy victory at sea was key to the overall success of Allieds winning the Guadalcanal Campaign.
