[ Colorado citizens gathered, in 1893, outside polling places during state voting ]
On tomorrow's date, November 7, in 1893, Colorado ratified an amendment to its State Constitution empowering women with the right to vote. This was the first time in U.S. history that a state referendum (a general vote for a single issue) approved women's suffrage (right to vote). And, it would not have passed had it not been for the hard work and lobbying by a grassroots group called the "Colorado Non-Partisan Equal Suffrage Association" - a team of women's organizations, churches, charity groups, unions, and farmer alliances.
As you probably know, it took another 27 years before women could vote in national elections across all 50 states - with passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920.
